JSEF Signal Article: July 2021

A big thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Sweat for Swett Virtual 5k!  We had over 40 participants who dared to get off the couch and run or walk 6,500 steps in any route or direction they chose to support of the John Swett Education Foundation.  If you signed up and have not already received your Sweat for Swett t-shirt, please contact us through our website at www.johnswettef.org as you don’t want to miss out on wearing this season’s fashion statement!

Congratulations to Marc Iturbe, recipient of the 2021 Salli Spoon Scholarship!  Marc was nominated as he demonstrated incredible compassion for others when a classmate committed suicide and he worked to give people the space to express their grief and process the loss.    The person who nominated him for the scholarship could see the joy in his eyes that he was making an impact and helping people.  Thank you Marc, for your big heart and the courage to make a difference!

If anyone is interested in donating to the Salli Spoon Scholarship, please go to www.johnswettef.org and donate.

The John Swett Educational Foundation (JSEF) held its monthly meeting on Tuesday June 15. We had the pleasure of having Jessica Shotwell, the Library Media Tech Specialist at Carquinez Middle School in attendance at the meeting.  She reached out to us and requested the JSEF fund a book subscription service through the Junior Library Guild which will send Carquinez Middle School 28 well curated hard bound books to add to their library.  The JSEF enthusiastically agreed to fund this request.

Also at the meeting was Charles Miller, Superintendent of the John Swett Unified School District.  He updated us on our schools reopening this spring and was happy to report there were very few incidents of Covid on any of our campuses and no serious incidents.  The JSUSD’s mission for the returning students is to create a sense of belonging and connectedness for students when they walk back into the classroom after having endured months and months of long distance learning during the pandemic.  “We are in this together” is the message Charles Miller and the district will continue to foster with our students.

All are welcome to join us for the next virtual meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday July 20th. Get your Zoom link by emailing our President, Emma Sutton at emma.jsef@gmail.com.
