JSEF Signal Article: December 2021

“Wait .. what happened to the Prom this year, the Get Lucky Prom for adults?”  You may be wondering if you blinked and missed it, the John Swett Education Foundation’s do-over prom for those of us who um, maybe did not get asked to the prom back in high school, or had a nightmare-ish time when the surfer dude you asked to be your date said your patchouli perfume smelled like a Tijuana BBQ.  In years past, those horrific memories could be deleted and replaced thanks to the John Swett Education Foundation’s infamous 21 and over Prom.  There was no prom this year, or the year before due to social distancing for some virus.  Plus we had a slight set back when the barn at the high school where we stored our table cloths and decorations burned down.

Have no fear!  At the John Swett Education Foundation we continue to dream up and plan fun fundraising events!  You could even say the John Swett Education Foundation puts the FUN in fundraising!   What do we have in store for you next?   Well, there is talk of a 5k run, “Sweat for Swett.”  Also we are planning — drum roll please — Crocktoberfest!  Dust off your lederhosen and beer stein and get ready for that!  If you or anyone you know plays the tuba or has an oompah band, please contact the John Swett Education Foundation for a future gig.

We had a great time at the PTA’s Bocce Tournament in November, Chris Scott did a wonderful job organizing the event.  Thanks to Lucia’s Craft Sandwiches in Crockett for catering the tournament.  At Halloween the John Swett Education Foundation participated in ‘Trunk or Treat’ at Rodeo Hills elementary school.  Nancy McClung decorated the trunk of her VW bug and let kids reach in and take candy and pencils for Halloween treats.  No tricks, just treats.

At our monthly meeting Charles Miller, the superintendent of the John Swett Unified School District filled us in on the latest news at our schools.  He said the morale of the teachers is ok, and Covid rates are low.  The school district is seeing the effect of supply chain issues and sometimes the cafeteria can’t get certain food items so the kitchen staff ends up substituting something else to serve hungry kids.  Charles let us know hiring people is competitive in this labor market.  If you have a teaching credential and would like to work in our schools, please contact Charles Miller.

You are always welcome to attend our monthly meeting, feel free to contact Emma Sutton and get a Zoom link to our next meeting on January 18, at 7:00 p.m. Her email address is: emma.jsef@gmail.com. See you on Zoom!
