John Swett Modernization Update

In addition to rising test scores, the big story at the high school over the last several years has been an ongoing reconstruction project to bring John Swett facilities into the 21st century. Beginning with a 20 million dollar bond measure passed by voters in 2008 in conjunction with the sale of the old elementary school property (Hillcrest), JSUSD began the process of modernizing the 85 year old building with a total budget of 40 million. Over the decades, the Ivy League charm of the school had faded gradually from wear and tear; it was also out of compliance with ADA guidelines for room size and handicap access.

Construction began in Spring 2009 with both the new athletic field and brick repair projects. In addition, related work such as window replacement, technology upgrades, boiler replacement, soil remediation, and a new roof have now been completed. In the Spring of 2011 the next phase of the project was started: the construction of a new Music Building (scheduled to open in December 2012) and a new Administrative/Classroom Building. Future projects in Phase III include modernizing the Main Building, Gymnasium/Locker Room, and Library.
